CE) EU 53 / US 6.5

A medieval bronze signet ring named 'Rosalind', its bezel shaped as an eight-petalled rosette, a flower and sun sign most likely worn as a wish for good fortune. Knobbed collars on both shoulders lead up to the thick, flat bezel plate.

The Motif:
Eight rounded petals make up the bezel, each carrying a small wave-like C-scroll that ends in a pellet. Together the scrolls form a wreath around a round central field, framed by a fine engraved circle. Lobed borders often framed a seal device on rings of this kind, so the field most likely held the owner's engraved mark, now worn smooth. A field left blank from the start is the other possible reading. The rosette is one of the oldest protective signs, a flower that doubles as a sun or star; on rings it stood for life, light and good fortune, and medieval religious art also read it as a sign of love and purity. With a mark at its centre, the ring doubled as its owner's seal.

Details:
Era: Medieval
Material: Bronze
Ring Size: EU 53 / US 6.5
Condition: Intact; very rough burial patina with earthen mineral deposits in the recesses; relief softened by wear and the central field worn smooth
Provenance: Private family collection assembled in the 1960s, later inherited by the previous owner (K.V.D., Belgium).
Unique Identifier: R-246-B
Authenticity: Comes with certificate of authenticity

Restoration and Authenticity:
This piece is preserved in its untouched state, showing natural aging and patina from centuries of burial and wear. A bronze signet put a personal seal within reach of ordinary people: pressed into wax, the owner's mark closed letters, sealed goods and stood in for a signature. The rosette recurs throughout the ornament of the period, on rings as on dress fittings and mounts. It kept much of its old amuletic sense, and many wearers most likely chose it as a small charm against harm.

In one small bezel, the ring framed a place for its owner's mark with a flower that promised light and good fortune.

Explore more Medieval rings from our collection.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0897/7140/9738/files/medieval-bronze-ring-rosalind-with-eight-lobed-rosette-bezel-three-quarter-view-1.jpg?v=1790374357
