CE) EU 48 / US 4.5

A Roman bronze signet ring named 'Tullia', its small raised disc bezel engraved with a worn device, possibly a palm branch, the Roman sign of victory and success. Sharply flared, keeled shoulders rise from a thin hoop to a pointed-oval top carrying the disc.

The Engraving:
A single upright device is engraved into the metal of the disc, its lines worn soft and still holding sandy earth. It is possibly a palm branch or a leaf spray. The outline, rounded at the top and forked in its lower half, fits a frond or a leafy sprig. A small standing figure or a bird is the other possible reading. To the Romans the palm stood for victory and success, and worn on the hand it was a wish for good fortune in whatever contest lay ahead. Cut into the bezel, the device printed in positive when pressed into wax, so the same small sign could also serve as its owner's seal.

Details:
Era: Roman
Material: Bronze
Ring Size: EU 48 / US 4.5
Condition: Sandy, light brownish patina with green, grey and red corrosion across the shoulders and bezel; the engraved device worn soft
Provenance: Private family collection assembled in the 1960s, later inherited by the previous owner (K.V.D., Belgium).
Unique Identifier: R-589-B
Authenticity: Comes with certificate of authenticity

Restoration and Authenticity:
This piece is preserved in its untouched state, showing natural aging and patina from centuries of burial and wear. In precious metal the type often held an engraved gemstone; bronze versions like this one carried the device cut straight into a disc of the same metal. On rings of this family the raised setting could also carry a good-luck wish such as VTERE FELIX ("use it with luck"). The palm branch was among the most frequent single devices on Roman ring bezels, a promise of victory whether in the struggles of this life or in the life to come.

Small as it is, the engraved disc gave its wearer a personal mark and possibly a daily wish for victory and good fortune.

Explore more Roman rings from our collection.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0897/7140/9738/files/roman-bronze-ring-tullia-standing-upright-showing-keeled-shoulders-and-disc-beze-1.jpg?v=1790374035
