CE) EU 56 / US 7.5

Made from a single length of silver wire. A plain round-section hoop runs around the back of the finger and is whipped at each shoulder in a collar of tight, individually countable turns, five on one side and six to seven on the other. Between the collars the face of the ring is carried by the looped wire itself, an upper row of about four rolled eyes over a lower row of about four open loops, abutting one another but never crossing. No solder, casting or engraving is visible on the piece. One eye has an old break, and copper corrosion is visible in the protected crevices between the collar turns.

Details:

Era: Roman (attributed)
Dating: 1st–4th c. CE
Type: Wire finger ring with a bezel of two loop rows (Guiraud 1989, type 6, form 6c; Riha 1990, type 2.19.1)
Material: Silver, tested by XRF
Ring Size: EU 56 / US 7.5
Condition: Darkened silver surfaces with wear on the hoop and one broken loop
Provenance: Private collection of K.V.D., Belgium, inherited from the Casteleyn collection assembled from the 1960s to the 1990s; acquired by Aurora Antiqua in August 2026.
Unique Identifier: R-287-S
Authenticity: Comes with certificate of authenticity

Metal analysis:
One XRF reading on the surface measured about 89 % silver, 7 % copper and 3 % tin, with small amounts of gold and lead. No cadmium or nickel was detected above the noise level of this reading. A surface reading is not a fineness and does not date the ring.

Historical Context:
Wire rings with rows of loops between wound shoulders are documented in the Roman provincial world of Gaul and the Rhine provinces. Two excavated bronze examples of this form from Augst, Switzerland, were found with pottery of the 1st century CE, while the type is recorded across the broader 1st to 4th century CE span. This ring has no recorded findspot and the form is simple and long-lived, so a date after the Roman period cannot be excluded on form alone.

Why This Piece?
The paired rows of loops and tightly wound shoulder collars preserve a clear example of hand-worked silver construction.

Explore more Ancient Roman Rings from our collection.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0897/7140/9738/files/viking-silver-ring-hlif-with-s-scroll-interlace-bezel-and-coiled-terminal-bindin-1.jpg?v=1787636413
https://auroraantiqua.com/products/roman-silver-ring-nodus-1st-4th-century-ce-ancient-wire-loop-bezel-guiraud-type-6
