This Byzantine silver ring, named 'Crucia,' carries on its flat disc bezel a cross pattée set within a lozenge frame, its corners filled with finely incised herringbone hatching. The bezel rests on delicate openwork leaf-shaped struts, a hallmark of middle Byzantine silversmithing, lifting the engraved disc above a slender wire hoop.

The cross pattée within a lozenge was a standard Byzantine devotional composition, appearing on seals, rings, and liturgical objects from the 6th century onward. Rings of this construction, with a wire hoop and applied disc bezel raised on openwork supports, are most characteristic of middle Byzantine workshops in Anatolia and the Balkans, where they served as personal devotional tokens worn close to the skin. The herringbone filler in the spandrels, repeated on the underside struts, reflects a consistent workshop hand and the period's love of geometric ornament around sacred symbols.
